What Is Biltong? Traditional South African Biltong Explained

Born from a passion for authentic South African flavours, crafted with British excellence.
Our Heritage

Born in South Africa, Made in Britain

The love for making Biltong goes back as far as 2005 and in a town called Kimberley in South Africa. I started The Biltong Factory with my father and mastered making the perfect piece of Biltong, Droëwors and Bites.

THIS IS BILTONG artistically manufactures the true main South African dried meat products – Biltong, Droëwors and Bites and to the same standards that have brought 23 years of success in South African to its equivalents.

All our products are made from British Grass-fed Beef. Our Meat is 100% fully traceable, and no corners are cut. The Spices are imported from South Africa to give you that sweet, savoury and softly pronounced flavour.

We use specialised driers for our meat and its under constant observation to regulate the temperature and humidity so that the end product is absolutely perfect every time.

What Is Biltong?

Biltong is a traditional South African cured and air-dried meat snack that has been enjoyed for generations. Made from premium cuts of beef, vinegar, salt and carefully selected spices, biltong is slowly air-dried to develop its rich flavour and distinctive texture.

Unlike many dried meat snacks, authentic South African biltong is not cooked or smoked. Instead, it is cured and naturally air-dried over several days, allowing the flavour of the beef and spices to develop naturally.

The origins of biltong date back hundreds of years when Dutch settlers in Southern Africa used vinegar, salt and spices to preserve meat during long journeys. Over time, this preservation method evolved into one of South Africa’s most iconic foods.

Today, biltong is enjoyed throughout South Africa and around the world. It is a favourite snack for sports fans, outdoor enthusiasts, families and anyone looking for a delicious high-protein snack.

How Is Biltong Made?

Traditional biltong starts with quality beef.

The meat is cut into strips before being seasoned with vinegar, salt, coriander and carefully selected spices. The beef is then left to cure before being hung in a controlled environment where it slowly air-dries.

At This Is Biltong, we use premium British grass-fed beef and authentic South African spices imported from South Africa. Our drying process is carefully controlled to replicate the cool, dry conditions that help create authentic South African biltong.

Biltong vs Jerky

Although biltong and jerky are often compared, they are very different products.

Biltong is cured and air-dried, while jerky is typically cooked or smoked.

Biltong is generally thicker, more tender and focuses on the natural flavour of the beef and spices. Jerky is often drier and may contain higher levels of sugar or marinades.

Many people who try authentic South African biltong appreciate its richer flavour and more natural texture.

Is Biltong Healthy?

Biltong is naturally high in protein and is enjoyed by many people as part of an active lifestyle.

Because it is made from quality beef and carefully selected ingredients, biltong is often chosen by gym-goers, sports enthusiasts and people looking for an alternative to heavily processed snacks.

As with any food, it should be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet, but many customers appreciate its high protein content and satisfying flavour.

Why South Africans Love Biltong

For many South Africans, biltong is more than a snack.

It is part of everyday life, whether enjoyed during a rugby match, road trip, family gathering or traditional braai.

The flavour, tradition and memories associated with biltong make it one of South Africa’s most loved foods. For South Africans living abroad, authentic biltong often provides a welcome taste of home.
